Helcim Alternatives: Why RapidCents Is the Better Choice
RapidCents is the better Helcim alternative for restaurants, retailers, grocers and multi-location businesses. It offers Restaurant, Retail and Grocery POS as separate products and the full Rivo terminal range, Canadian payment specialists who review your statement and guide your migration instead of Helcim’s self-serve setup, and dispute tools with alerts, evidence packs and deadline tracking.
Why RapidCents is the better Helcim alternative
POS software built for your format
RapidCents offers Restaurant POS, Retail POS and Grocery & Supermarket POS as separate products, plus online ordering, so a restaurant, a shop and a grocery store each run software designed around how they sell. Helcim offers one POS app, run on a laptop, tablet or smartphone, across every business type it serves.
A terminal for every checkout
RapidCents offers Rivo Go, a flagship Android smart terminal with a built-in thermal printer; Rivo Touch, a slim all-screen terminal; and Rivo Link, a compact handheld with a tactile PIN pad, battery, Wi-Fi and 4G. Helcim’s price list shows two payment devices, a Card Reader at $239 and a Smart Terminal at $429 (CAD, September 2026), plus Tap to Pay on iPhone.
Specialists who read your statement
RapidCents puts Canadian payment specialists on your account who read your statement line by line before you switch. Helcim’s phone support runs Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, closing at 7 p.m. in Toronto, with a 12-business-hour target for answering tickets.
A guided switch, not a self-serve one
RapidCents guides the move with pre-configured terminals, parallel testing while your current setup still runs and staff training before cutover, and most merchants move in one to three weeks. Multi-Location Payments adds a location hierarchy, consolidated deposits and role-based access. Helcim is built around online sign-up and self-serve setup.
Dispute tools that build your case
RapidCents Chargeback Protection sends dispute alerts, assembles evidence packs from transaction, authorization and delivery detail, tracks deadlines, gives reason-code guidance and reports your win rate, alongside Fraud Prevention and 3D Secure. Helcim charges $15 for each chargeback, refunded only when the dispute is resolved in your favour (September 2026).
Recurring billing on the same statement
RapidCents prices recurring payments on the same interchange-plus statement as the rest of your card sales, itemized per transaction, and Account Updater keeps stored cards current through expiry and reissue. Helcim adds 0.4% to each recurring transaction on top of its margin (September 2026).
Leave by written notice
Neither provider charges a cancellation fee. RapidCents closes an account on your written notice, at any time, under Services Agreement clauses A.4 and F.1.2, so the request is on record. Helcim’s terms of service have merchants close by calling its support team during business hours.
Why merchants look for Helcim alternatives
One POS app for every business type
Helcim offers a single POS app for laptops, tablets and smartphones, used across retail, restaurants, healthcare and service businesses. Restaurants that run tables and kitchen tickets, and grocers that run busy lanes, look for POS software built for their format instead.
Hardware you have to buy
Helcim sells its Card Reader for $239 and its Smart Terminal for $429 or 12 monthly payments of $39, plus $9 a month for optional mobile data (CAD, September 2026). With two payment devices on its price list plus Tap to Pay on iPhone, merchants who want more form factors compare wider terminal ranges.
Phone support stops at 5 p.m. Mountain Time
Helcim lists phone hours of Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, and no Sunday hours; tickets carry a 12-business-hour response target. For an Ontario restaurant, a payment problem after 7 p.m. on a Friday or during Sunday brunch falls outside those phone hours.
Recurring payments add 0.4%
Helcim adds 0.4% to each recurring transaction on top of its processing margin, as of September 2026. On $10,000 a month of recurring billing, that is $40 a month, or $480 a year, before the margin itself.
A $15 fee on every lost chargeback
Helcim charges $15 per chargeback and refunds it only when the dispute is resolved in the merchant’s favour, as of September 2026. Businesses that face disputes regularly want alerts, evidence and deadline tracking working for them before a case is lost.
Reviews that start after the first sale
In its replies to BBB complaints, Helcim says it reviews accounts at sign-up, when the first batch is processed and periodically after that, and that the outcome decides whether the relationship continues. Its terms of service also let it delay payouts or hold funds in reserve.
What merchants report about Helcim
Accounts closed after the first sales
A March 2025 complaint on Helcim’s Calgary BBB profile describes an account approved, then closed after $10,000 in sales in its first two days, with the card payments cancelled back to customers. Helcim replied that it reviews accounts at sign-up and again when the first batch is processed. (Source: BBB)
180-day holds after closure
Two 2025 complaints on the BBB profile of Helcim USA, Inc. describe accounts closed with notice that funds would be held for at least 180 days: US$3,124.92 after a single US$75 chargeback, held until February 14, 2026, and US$14,307.70, which Helcim’s reply said it had already released. Helcim’s replies point to its terms, which allow a reserve of at least six months after termination. (Source: BBB)
Payments held during reviews after approval
Several one-star Trustpilot reviews dated May to July 2026 describe reviews that began after an account was approved: a $3,390 payment held for six days, with the account closed during the hold; funds from two test transactions held after a second review; and an account terminated after its first batches. (Source: Trustpilot)
Long waits to reach support
One-star Trustpilot reviews from June and July 2026 describe holds of about 25 minutes on each of two support calls, a wait of over an hour to speak with a representative during onboarding, and callbacks that came one or two days after leaving a message. (Source: Trustpilot)
Accounts closed after a chargeback
Two one-star Trustpilot reviews from May and July 2026 describe accounts closed after chargebacks: one after a single Visa chargeback the merchant had answered with written evidence, the other after chargebacks the merchant called unjustified, with the account cancelled as high risk. (Source: Trustpilot)
Smart Terminal faults outside the return window
An August 2026 complaint on the BBB profile of Helcim USA, Inc. describes a Smart Terminal bought in January 2026 that froze on a blue screen and had SIM and mobile data problems, and a replacement that developed the same blue-screen fault. Helcim declined a refund because its 30-day hardware return window had passed. (Source: BBB)

How to compare two interchange-plus providers on total cost
Definition
The total cost of an interchange-plus provider is everything it adds on top of interchange: the markup on each transaction, any surcharges such as a recurring-payment charge, the hardware you must buy, and the staff time spent getting support. Interchange is passed through at cost, so the same transaction carries the same interchange at either provider.
How it works
Split your card sales by type and price each with your own numbers: percentage margin times volume, plus the per-transaction fee times the transaction count. Add any surcharge on the transactions it applies to, then the hardware you need in year one. Finally, note when support is reachable against your trading hours.
Example
Worked example using Helcim’s published first-tier margins (CAD, September 2026), for a business with $40,000 of monthly card sales. In-person credit: $30,000 over 600 transactions at 0.40% + 8¢ is $120 + $48 = $168. Online recurring billing: $10,000 over 200 transactions at 0.50% + 25¢ is $50 + $50 = $100, plus the 0.4% recurring charge of $40, for $140. Monthly markup: $308, or 0.77% of sales. Year one with two Smart Terminals at $429: $308 × 12 = $3,696, plus $858, for $4,554 before interchange.
Why it matters
In that example the recurring charge alone adds $480 a year and the terminals add $858 before a single sale, so two providers with similar margins can end the year far apart. Support hours carry a cost that never appears on a statement: a terminal fault after hours waits for phone support to reopen.
How RapidCents handles it
RapidCents Fee Check does this arithmetic on your real Helcim statement: upload it and see what you really pay and your effective rate, with no obligation. RapidCents prices recurring payments on the same interchange-plus statement as the rest of your sales, itemized per transaction, and its Canadian payment specialists read your statement line by line before you decide.

What to check on your current statement
Effective rate
Total fees divided by total card volume. It is the one number that makes Helcim’s published tiers comparable with any other offer.
Your volume tier
Helcim assigns tiers on a three-month rolling average of card volume. Check which tier your last three months put you in, and whether a busy season lifts it for only part of the year.
Recurring surcharges
Total the transactions carrying Helcim’s 0.4% recurring charge. For a membership or subscription business, this line can move the effective rate more than the margin itself.
Per-transaction fees against your average ticket
Multiply your transaction count by the per-transaction fee and divide by volume. A 25¢ online fee is 0.25% of a $100 sale but 2.5% of a $10 sale.
Interac and hardware lines
Price Interac Debit separately, since Helcim charges it per transaction rather than as a percentage, and separate any mobile data or Smart Terminal instalment lines so the card comparison is like for like.
How to switch from Helcim
Measure what you pay now. Download your last three Helcim statements and upload one to Fee Check to see your effective rate and a comparison based on your actual transactions.
List everything that runs through Helcim. Note each card reader and Smart Terminal, your POS catalogue, invoice templates, payment links, online checkout and any website or accounting tool connected through Helcim’s API or Payment Extension.
Plan card-on-file and recurring customers. Cards stored in Helcim’s customer vault can move to another provider only through a PCI-compliant data export, so ask Helcim and RapidCents about a card-vault migration early, or plan for customers to re-enter their cards.
Set up RapidCents in parallel. RapidCents ships pre-configured Rivo terminals and connects online checkout, payment links and recurring billing before cutover, so both systems run side by side while you test.
Train staff and cut over. After parallel testing and staff training, switch terminals, POS and online checkout on your chosen date, and stop new recurring charges on Helcim once the same schedules are running on RapidCents.
Settle your Helcim hardware. Helcim card readers and Smart Terminals are bought rather than rented, so there is nothing to return; if you are paying for a Smart Terminal in 12 monthly instalments or paying for mobile data, check what remains before you close.
Close the Helcim account. Helcim’s Canadian terms of service let you close at any time by calling support during business hours, with no cancellation fee. Reconcile the final deposits, keep funds available for chargebacks on earlier sales, and ask for written confirmation that the account is closed.
The verdict
In short
RapidCents is the better choice for restaurants, retailers, grocers and multi-location businesses because it offers POS built for each format, the Rivo Go, Rivo Touch and Rivo Link terminals, Canadian payment specialists who read your statement and guide a parallel-tested migration, and Chargeback Protection with alerts, evidence packs and deadline tracking. Helcim only makes sense if you run a single location or sell mainly online, are comfortable setting up and troubleshooting on your own within its support hours, and bill little through recurring payments.
Frequently asked questions
Why is RapidCents a better Helcim alternative?
RapidCents is a better Helcim alternative for restaurants, retailers, grocers and multi-location businesses because it offers Restaurant, Retail and Grocery & Supermarket POS as separate products, the Rivo Go, Rivo Touch and Rivo Link terminals, Canadian payment specialists who read your statement line by line, guided migration with parallel testing, and Chargeback Protection. Helcim offers one POS app, self-serve setup and phone support Monday to Saturday, Mountain Time.
What do merchants report about Helcim?
Published merchant complaints about Helcim include accounts closed soon after their first sales, notices of 180-day fund holds after closure in two 2025 BBB complaints, and support waits of about 25 minutes to over an hour in one-star Trustpilot reviews from June and July 2026. Helcim replies that KYC, KYB, risk and anti-money-laundering rules require account reviews. Each report on this page links its source.
What are Helcim’s support hours?
Helcim’s phone support runs Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, which is 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Toronto, and Helcim lists no Sunday hours. Tickets carry a 12-business-hour response target, as of September 2026. RapidCents gives you Canadian payment specialists who read your statement line by line and guide your migration.
Is RapidCents cheaper than Helcim?
It depends on your numbers. Both price on interchange-plus, so interchange is the same at either one, and the total turns on the markup, Helcim’s 0.4% recurring surcharge if you bill recurring payments, the hardware you buy and the time spent on support. Run Fee Check on a recent Helcim statement to see what you really pay today, your effective rate and a comparison, with no obligation.
Does Helcim charge for chargebacks?
Yes. Helcim charges $15 per chargeback and refunds the fee when the dispute is resolved in the merchant’s favour, so each lost chargeback costs $15 on top of the disputed sale, as of September 2026. Helcim’s Canadian terms of service also let it require a reserve that lasts at least six months after an account closes.
How does RapidCents help reduce chargebacks compared with Helcim?
RapidCents works on both sides of a dispute. Fraud Prevention screens risky transactions, and 3D Secure shifts fraud liability where authentication succeeds and card rules apply. When a dispute arrives, Chargeback Protection sends an alert, assembles an evidence pack from transaction, authorization and delivery detail, tracks the deadline, gives reason-code guidance and reports your win rate. Helcim’s published pricing sets a $15 fee for each lost chargeback.
Is RapidCents or Helcim better for restaurants and grocery stores?
RapidCents is the stronger fit, because it offers Restaurant POS and Grocery & Supermarket POS as separate products built for those formats, with online ordering, Rivo Go’s built-in printer and the Rivo Link handheld for tableside payments. Helcim offers one POS app for all business types. Book a consultation and test table service, tips and lane speed on RapidCents before you switch.
Is RapidCents a good Helcim alternative for multi-location businesses?
Yes. RapidCents Multi-Location Payments gives you a location hierarchy, consolidated deposits and role-based access, with terminals, POS, online payments and invoicing in one dashboard, and guided migration brings pre-configured terminals, parallel testing and staff training to the rollout. Helcim’s setup is self-serve, and its phone support is available during published Monday-to-Saturday hours in Mountain Time.
How do I close a Helcim account?
Under Helcim’s Canadian terms of service, you close your account by calling Helcim’s support team during business hours, Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, and Helcim charges no cancellation fee. Closing does not end liability for earlier chargebacks, and Helcim may require a reserve for at least six months. Have RapidCents running first, then ask Helcim for written confirmation.
How long does switching from Helcim to RapidCents take?
Most merchants move to RapidCents in one to three weeks, depending on terminal count, integrations and how card-on-file customers migrate. RapidCents ships pre-configured Rivo terminals, runs parallel testing while Helcim still processes your sales, and trains your staff before cutover, so no trading day depends on an untested setup.
