Nuvei Alternatives: Nuvei vs RapidCents

The best Nuvei alternative depends on how global your business is. Nuvei serves enterprise and cross-border commerce in 150 currencies and does not publish a standard rate card. RapidCents serves small and mid-sized businesses selling in person and online, with interchange-plus pricing, Rivo terminals and online payments on one account, and no early termination fee.

Why merchants look for Nuvei alternatives

  • Global scope for a mostly domestic business

Nuvei’s platform is designed around many markets, currencies and payment methods. A business that sells mainly in one country can end up evaluating capability it will not use, when the decision that moves its cost is the pricing model.

  • No published rate card

Without a public price list, the only way to compare Nuvei with another provider is a quote. Merchants who want to see pricing before a sales conversation often start their research elsewhere.

  • Contract terms worth reading closely

Nuvei’s published 2018 terms of service for every market you sell in set a three-year initial term with automatic renewals and early termination damages. Confirm which terms govern your own agreement before you plan a switch.

  • Corporate change

Nuvei went private in 2024 and agreed to acquire Payoneer in 2026. Some merchants use a period of corporate change to check whether the platform’s direction still matches what their business needs.

  • In-person and online on one account

Businesses that take most of their revenue at a counter want terminals, a virtual terminal, payment links and online checkout settling into one dashboard, supported by one team.

What Nuvei does well

  • Nuvei

Nuvei has genuine global depth: pay-ins and payouts in 150 currencies, more than 720 alternative payment methods, local acquiring in 52 markets, card issuing, payment orchestration and experience in regulated verticals such as online gaming. For an enterprise or cross-border business that needs one platform across many countries, it is a strong contender.

What is local acquiring, and does your business need it?

  • Definition

Local acquiring means a card payment is processed by an acquirer in the same country as the bank that issued the card, so the networks treat the transaction as domestic rather than cross-border.

  • How it works

When a card issued in one country is processed through an acquirer in another, the card networks classify the payment as cross-border, which usually adds assessment fees and can lower approval rates. Global platforms such as Nuvei hold acquiring connections in many countries and route each payment through the local one.

  • Example

A retailer whose customers mostly pay with cards issued in its own country is already processing domestically, so acquiring locally abroad adds little. A marketplace selling heavily into Europe, Latin America and Asia can gain higher approval rates and lower cross-border costs by acquiring locally in each of those markets.

  • Why it matters

Local acquiring is worth paying for in proportion to how much of your volume is foreign-issued. If that share is small, the pricing model, the effective rate and how in-person and online payments are managed decide far more of your total cost.

  • How RapidCents handles it

RapidCents processes domestic card and debit payments, accepts foreign-issued cards and settles to your own account, and prices on interchange-plus. For a business whose volume is overwhelmingly domestic, that covers the payments it actually takes; a business acquiring in dozens of markets is better served by a global platform.

What to check on your current statement

  • Effective rate

Total fees divided by total volume. This single number is how you compare any two providers honestly.

  • Cross-border and currency fees

If you see cross-border, currency conversion or foreign card fees, measure the share of volume they apply to. That share tells you whether multi-market acquiring is earning its keep.

  • Fixed monthly and gateway fees

Add every fixed monthly, gateway, PCI and statement fee to the processing cost before comparing. A low percentage carrying heavy fixed fees is not a low price.

  • Reserves, renewal and termination

Check whether a rolling reserve holds back part of your settlements, and note the renewal date and early termination terms written into your agreement.

How to switch from Nuvei

  1. Read your agreement. Find the initial term, the renewal date and any early termination provision; Nuvei’s 2018 terms of service for every market you sell in used a three-year term with automatic renewals, but your own agreement is the one that governs.

  2. Give notice in the window your agreement sets. The 2018 terms for every market you sell in required 90 days’ notice to stop a renewal; check the period in your agreement and send notice in writing.

  3. Measure your current cost. Upload a recent statement to Fee Check to calculate your effective rate and get a comparison based on your actual transactions.

  4. List what you use today. Write down the currencies, payment methods, payouts and integrations you rely on, so nothing a customer uses disappears at cutover.

  5. Set up RapidCents in parallel. Configure Rivo terminals, online checkout, payment links and webhooks, and run test transactions while Nuvei stays live.

  6. Plan card-on-file customers. Stored card data can only move between providers through a PCI-compliant data migration, so ask both providers about a card-vault migration before cutover or plan for customers to re-enter their cards.

  7. Cut over and close out. Switch traffic on your chosen date, reconcile the final settlements and any reserve release, and get written confirmation that the account is closed.

The verdict

  • In short

Choose Nuvei if you run an enterprise, marketplace or cross-border business that needs many currencies, alternative payment methods, payouts and local acquiring on one global platform. Choose RapidCents if you are a small or mid-sized business selling mostly in your home market, in person and online, and want interchange-plus pricing, Rivo terminals, one dashboard and no early termination fee.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Nuvei alternatives?

It depends on scope. For a global or cross-border business, the closest alternatives are enterprise platforms such as Adyen, Stripe and Global Payments. For a small or mid-sized business that sells mainly in its home market, in person and online, providers such as RapidCents and Helcim are the more direct fit, and the pricing model becomes the thing to compare.

Is RapidCents cheaper than Nuvei?

Nuvei does not publish a standard rate card, so no honest answer is possible without seeing your statement. Fee Check calculates your current effective rate from a recent statement and gives you a comparison based on your actual transactions and card mix.

Who owns Nuvei?

Nuvei has been privately held since November 15, 2024, when Advent International completed its take-private of the company alongside founder Philip Fayer, Novacap and CDPQ. Nuvei was previously listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and Nasdaq.

Is Nuvei buying Payoneer?

Yes. On June 15, 2026, Nuvei announced an agreement to acquire Payoneer for about US$2.75 billion. The transaction requires Payoneer shareholder and regulatory approval before it can close.

Where is Nuvei headquartered?

In Montreal, Quebec. Nuvei was founded in 2003 as Pivotal Payments, rebranded as Nuvei in 2018, and now operates globally with local acquiring in 52 markets.

Does Nuvei work for small businesses?

Nuvei lists SMB and hospitality among the segments it serves and offers in-person payments through its POS+ platform. Much of its platform is built for enterprise, digital and cross-border commerce, so a small business should compare its quote with providers built primarily for businesses of its size.

Does Nuvei charge an early termination fee?

Nuvei’s published October 2018 terms of service for every market you sell in include early termination damages, ranging from a flat amount for lower-volume merchants to a calculation based on remaining months and average revenue for larger ones. Whether that version applies to you depends on your agreement, so check it before giving notice. RapidCents charges no early termination fee.

Can RapidCents accept international cards like Nuvei?

RapidCents accepts foreign-issued cards and settles the funds to your own account. It is not a multi-market acquiring platform: a business that needs local acquiring in dozens of countries, or payouts in many currencies, will find Nuvei’s global network a closer fit.

Does RapidCents support PIN debit?

Yes. RapidCents supports PIN debit alongside Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

How long does it take to switch from Nuvei?

Most in-person and online setups move in one to three weeks, depending on terminal count, integrations and how card-on-file customers are migrated. Running both providers in parallel before cutover keeps every trading day on a tested setup.
