  • Why grocery is its own category

    A retail POS assumes a short basket of scanned, barcoded goods sold from one counter. Grocery breaks all three assumptions at once. Grocery & Supermarket POS is built for that: high-speed scanning through long baskets, items priced by weight, several lanes on a shared catalogue and shared permissions, and reporting sized for high transaction counts.

  • Weighed items and restricted items

    Produce and deli items are weighed and priced at the lane rather than scanned, and restricted items prompt the cashier for the required check before the sale can complete. Both are lane behaviour rather than back-office configuration, which is why they belong in a live checkout test and not in a feature comparison.

  • Debit changes the pricing question

    A basket that settles on debit is not priced like one that settles on credit, and a blended rate charges both as though they were the same thing. Interchange-plus separates network interchange from the processor’s markup, which is what lets a debit-heavy basket be priced at what it actually costs. Amex works differently and sits outside that comparison.

  • Three prices, not one

    A grocery quote has a software layer, a hardware layer and a processing layer, and vendors bundle them in different combinations. Compare them separately or the comparison is not a comparison — per-lane licences, lease versus purchase, and where processing hides inside a bundled price are the three places to look first.

Grocery checkout questions

How many lanes can run on one setup?

Several, on a shared catalogue and shared permissions, with per-lane totals reconciling against deposits at day end. Once the catalogue is shared, lane count becomes mostly a hardware and store-layout question rather than a software one.

What happens at the lane when the connection drops?

Authorization needs a live connection. Store-and-forward may apply for brief outages depending on the device and its configuration, and terminals with LTE failover close most of the remaining gap. What each payment type can and cannot do during an outage is worth establishing for your own lanes before one happens.

Does the checkout handle items sold by weight without a second system?

Produce and deli items are weighed and priced at the lane as part of checkout. What to verify in a demo is the lookup: how a cashier finds an item with no barcode, and how many keystrokes that takes at the eleventh item of a long basket rather than the first.

We already have lanes and hardware. Does all of that have to change?

Not necessarily. APPIE and integrated payments let existing point-of-sale software drive RapidCents terminals, so the processing layer can be evaluated on its own before the checkout software is touched. That is also the cheapest way to find out whether pricing was the problem all along.

Is a grocery migration the same project as a small-format switch?

No — catalogue size and lane count make it longer. Plan for catalogue import, lane-by-lane testing and staff training, with the cutover scheduled outside peak trading days rather than squeezed into a quiet hour.
